The complex is located in the lovely old town of Sozopol - just 300m from its center and 120m from the sea.
Sozopol is a small ancient town located on the southern Bulgarian Black Sea coast. With his 5000 inhabitants of today, Sozopol is one of the oldest towns on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast line. Located 34 kilometers south of Bourgas on a slender rocky peninsula and three isles, Sozopol was founded in 610 BC by Miletian Greeks as their colony of Apollonia, thrived as a middleman between the Greek and the Thracian world. Later, in the years of early Christianity it was named Sozopol and so was inhabited for more then 2600 years. The Bulgarian National Revival period left its own vivid marks on the appearance of this unusual town with fine architectural ensembles of solid wooden houses.
Today, this charming place is a popular tourist resort best known for its casual ambience, several sandy beaches, and distinctive nineteenth-century stone and wood houses, some 45 of which are designated national cultural monuments. A stroll along the old town's twisting, narrow cobblestone lanes reveals a host of National Revival-era houses, their stone foundations and overhanging upper stories of weathered wood topped by Mediterranean-style red-tiled roofs. The sea-facing streets are lined with small restaurants and cafes, ideal for taking in the views while digging into a plate of tasty locally-raised midi (mussels) fishes and other delicacies.
In addition to being an important trading colony, Apollonia was an active arts and cultural center, a tradition that continues with the annual Apollonia Arts Festival in early September. During these days every night one can choose among a theatre performance, jazz or chamber concert, presentation of a new book, or a ballet performance in the open. The 10 days of the Festival are just enough to accommodate the fifty cultural events with more than 1000 artists, musicians, performers. Five stages with different atmosphere provide the rare and excellent opportunity to enjoy art.
While Sozopol is a bustling place during May-October, in the off-season it reverts back to a sleepy fishing village and is a favored haunt of artists, writers and other contemplative types. The proximity to Bourgas - the administrative and economic centre of Southeast Bulgaria in combination with the opportunities for tourism, recreation and sports leads to more active investments and the foundation of new enterprises.
